Révélé en 2001 avec le film de science-fiction Donnie Darko de Richard Kelly, il se fait connaître du grand public grâce à sa participation au film catastrophe Le Jour d'après (2004), puis en tenant l'un des rôles principaux de l'acclamé drame Le Secret de Brokeback Mountain (2005) d'Ang Lee, celui de Jack Twist, qui lui vaut une nomination à l'Oscar du meilleur acteur dans un second rôle.
